Extended Information
Citysound Music announces a classical-pop crossover concert of cool and intrepid arrangements of rock songs for string quartet and vocals. LearnAboutWine will be hosting a VIP Wine Tasting event prior to the concert from 6 p.m. - 7:45 p.m. on the Edison Plaza of the Ford Amphitheatre. Learn About Wine offers wine tasting classes, events, and tours around Los Angeles and has partnered with Citysound Music to make “Notes From The Edge” a classically elegant evening.
Stunning arrangements, world-class musicianship and the haunting and sultry vocals of chanteuse Kathy Fisher mark "Notes from the Edge," teetering on the boundary between pop and classical music performance. With soul, style and wit, arranger Mark Governor and ensemble traverse the wilds of pop, alternative and new concert music, reinterpreting songs in ways unexpected and sublime.
The concert will feature songs on the upcoming NOTES FROM THE EDGE Album (release in Spring 2008): No Surprises (Radiohead), Peace Love & Understanding (Elvis Costello), Hide and Seek (Imogen Heap), Mr. Brightside (The Killers), Hey You (Pink Floyd), Blue (Joni Mitchell), Take It With Me (Tom Waits), Under Pressure (David Bowie), Hidden Place (Bjork) and more.
Also on Monday June 2nd at 7:00 p.m., the artists of “Notes From The Edge” will present an interactive musical workshop, “Nirvana to Beethoven” as part of the Ford’s new J.A.M. (Jazzed And Motivated) SESSIONS, fun, free opportunities to learn under the guidance of Ford 2008 artists. Singers and musicians of all levels (string and chord instruments) learn how to transform a familiar pop tune into a modern classical arrangement and perform the song together with “Notes From The Edge” artists.
“We are breaking down the barriers between pop music and classical music in the concert world. This concert builds on the popularity of classical music groups who include pop arrangements in their repertoire, adding a pop vocalist to the equation. It is new to have a concert be mainly interpretations of rock and alternative artist’s work. Artists like Elvis Costello and Joni Mitchell have performed with quartets, but mostly doing their own material, with perhaps one or two songs by others. Also, the choice of material is surprising – while one might expect to hear something by the Beatles or Celine Dion in this kind of concert, one would not expect Radiohead or Green Day or The Killers in this context. It is the reinterpretation that makes it surprising and appealing to both rock and classical audiences” – states composer / arranger Mark Governor.
